ABSTRACT

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition that occurs in women and is associated with problems such as menstrual irregularities; hirsutism; obesity; insulin resistance; acne; and later life with diabetes mellitus and uterine cancer. The study aim was to assess phenotype characteristics and risk factors of polycystic ovarian syndrome among nursing students. Materials and Methods: Cross sectional study (descriptive) included a sample of 400 females from Faculty of Nursing, Zagazig University, Egypt. Were used for data collection; structured-interviewing questionnaire sheet, data related to anthropometric measures, risk factors about PCOS and observational check list about phenotype characteristics of PCO. Results: 6% of the studied student females had family history of PCO, nearly half of them had fast food, more than half of studied student females had hirsutism, more than one quarter had acne, (14.5%) had menstrual irregularity and one third of them had continuous abnormal weight gain. Also, this study showed that lack of awareness was found among majority of girls about PCOS. Discussion: Therefore, it could be concluded that, family history of PCOS, obesity and fast-food diet habits are found to be the predisposing factors for development of PCOS. The risk of PCOS increases with presence of one or more identified predisposing factors. Most of the factors tested as predisposing factors in our study are interlinked to each other and are mostly modifiable Although that PCOS is prevalent endocrine disorder, there was poor knowledge among student females in Faculty of Nursing Zagazig University. Conclusion: The study recommended screening program from ministry of health for early detection of predisposing factors of PCOS including the secondary school students and faculties students through educational programs and messages through the counseling, brochures, to increase students' awareness about PCOS symptoms. Further research on larger sample size to identify how the problem is risky and how to deal it. Including the problem in social media and healthy channels

ABSTRACT

Introduction. The susceptibilities of plantations to attack by harmful organisms can cause harmful effects for their development, when it is considered that the level of damage caused cannot be tolerated, it is essential to correctly determine the nature of the causal agent, be it biotic or abiotic; The correct determination of the agent of a phytosanitary problem in a nursery or forest plantations is based on a detailed analysis of the factors that may be affecting it. Tabebuia rosea or pink Guayacán is a native forest species widely accepted in the market, which presents, during its nursery stage, limitations in the germination, emergence and survival phases, therefore the objective of this research was to morphologically identify the possible pathogens associated with Tabebuia rosea in the nursery stage and check its pathogenicity. Methodology. Nursery seedlings were taken, which were analyzed for signs and symptoms for the isolation and sowing of affected areas on potato dextrose agar. In the mixed culture, possible pathogens were identified, which were sown to obtain pure cultures, and used in the pathogenicity test, for the inoculation of healthy structures (leaves, petioles and stems) and their respective control. Results. Three fungal genera Colletotrichum, Mucor, and Candida, and a nematode genus named Meloidogyne were identified. The pathogenicity test for Colletotrichum and Candida showed significant relationships in the infection process mainly in leaf structures. Two new possible pathogenic genera for Tabebuia rosea evidenced in the pathogenicity test are concluded in this work. And it is corroborated that the genus Meloidogyne is a severe pathogen in the pink guayacán that causes morphological anomalies in the root; It should be noted that it is the first report for the department of Risaralda

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised hosts are caused by Candida species, and the majority of such infections are due to Candida albicans. However, the emerging pathogen Candida dubliniensis demonstrates several phenotypic characteristics in common with C. albicans, such as production of germ tubes and chlamydospores, calling attention to the development of stable resistance to fluconazole in vitro. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of biochemistry identification in the differentiating between C. albicans and C. dubliniensis, by phenotyping of yeast identified as C. albicans. METHODS: Seventy-nine isolates identified as C. albicans by the API system ID 32C were grown on Sabouraud dextrose agar at 30°C for 24-48h and then inoculated on hypertonic Sabouraud broth and tobacco agar. RESULTS: Our results showed that 17 (21.5%) isolates were growth-inhibited on hypertonic Sabouraud broth, a phenotypic trait inconsistent with C. albicans in this medium. However, the results observed on tobacco agar showed that only 9 (11.4%) of the growth-inhibited isolates produced characteristic colonies of C. dubliniensis (rough colonies, yellowish-brown with abundant fragments of hyphae and chlamydospores). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that this method is a simple tool for screening C. albicans and non-albicans yeast and for verification of automated identification.
